December 18, 2017

Dear Families,

As you probably know by now, the New Mexico Public Education Department has determined that your child’s school is in need More Rigorous Intervention. Three APS elementary schools have been identified as what are being called MRI schools – Hawthorne, Los Padillas and Whittier.

What does this mean for your child? For now, nothing. School will continue as it always has. Students and staff will take a two-week winter break, and we look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Jan. 3.

When we return, we will continue to develop a plan of action for implementing change at your child’s school as required by the state Public Education Department. The state has outlined four possibilities for change:

  • Significantly changing the way the school runs
  • Converting into a charter school
  • Turning into a magnet school or
  • Closing.

Please know that no recommendation will be made without community input, and whichever option is chosen will have the best interest of your child at heart.

Once the plan is approved by the Public Education Department, we will share details with you. We promise that this will be a transparent process involving all stakeholders, so that when school starts next fall, you’ll know what to expect. No surprises.  We are committed to keeping our families and staff informed.

In the meantime, teaching and learning will continue at your child’s school, and the programs and practices that have been put into place to help your child will remain.

Change can be scary, and I understand why many of our students and families are feeling anxious. I encourage you to stay in touch with your child’s teacher and principal and to be a part of this process.

But for now, enjoy a little time off from school. Your child has been working hard, as have the teachers and staff at your child’s school, and all deserve a little time to rest and regroup.

I wish you all the best this holiday season. See you in 2018!

Sincerely,

Raquel Reedy, Superintendent
Albuquerque Public Schools

Estimadas familias:

No habrá sorpresas.

Atentamente,

Raquel Reedy, Superintendente
Escuelas Públicas de Albuquerque

Exciting News!! Whittier will be participating in the Balloons Aloft this year.  We will have a hot air balloon inflating on campus on Friday October 6th.  The balloon will begin inflating at 7:00 on the playground.  Due to our close proximity to the base and airport it will not be able to launch but it will still be an amazing opportunity to see a beautiful balloon up close.
