Welcome to Whittier!

Dear Whittier Parents, Students, and Teachers:

Welcome back!  We are very excited to begin our 2017-2018 school year, and in doing so, want to remind our parents, students, and other community members of just a few of the wonderful things that happened last year.  Our Scholastic Book Fairs raised enough funds to help us create and establish a reading garden.  This project is currently underway and supervised by of our wonderful Librarian, Dan Bernard.  Mr. Bernard also helped to establish a strong community partnership with Home Depot that donated many landscaping materials and paint for our school beautification projects, which are also currently underway.  In addition, Mr. Bernard and Whittier’s Library received the Laura Bush Foundation Grant, which provides a substantial amount of money for the renovation of our library book collection.

In order to provide the best school atmosphere possible, Whittier’s CAPE team examined and redesigned many of our school’s daily operational functions.  These operational functions include locations and responsibilities for teacher duty assignments, procedures for synchronizing the closing and opening of pedestrian gates during student arrival and departure times, a school wide expectation and response to students who are tardy to class, and a unified school wide response to any parent, community volunteer, or visitor on campus between 7:50 and 1:50 without a visitor badge.

Here are some very important things to keep in mind for the first day of school:

7:35: Students may begin arriving to campus

7:45: Duty staff begins closing all pedestrian gates (if you and your student arrive to school later than 7:45, please bring your student to the front of the building to enter the school)

7:50:  Classroom Instruction Begins

1:50:  All pedestrian gates are open

2:00:  Classroom Instruction Ends and school is dismissed

We are very excited to begin our fresh, new school year.  Whittier Elementary School holds the values of excellence, loyalty, and pride at the forefront of our work.  We believe all children can, and do, learn.  As such, we provide our students a standards and research based quality education, in a productive, collaborative, and safe atmosphere.  As we move through this school year, we are looking forward to building stronger instructional and social learning structures for our students and families.

Regards,
